Im FWF Projekt Ableism, the dis/ability binary and beyond: A feminist intersectional approach to theory and digital activism wird gemeinsam mit feministischen behinderten Aktivistinnen untersucht, wie, von wem/für wen und zu welchem Zweck Ableism (oder auch Ableismus) bislang in Wissenschaft und Aktivismus thematisiert wurde. Dabei geht es vor allem darum, inwiefern in der Thematisierung von Ableism das Zusammenspiel von (Nicht-)Behinderung, Geschlecht, sozialer Klasse und Race berücksichtigt wird. Außerdem wird erforscht, wie die Aktivistinnen selbst in ihrem (u.a. digitalen) Aktivismus Ableism und körperliche Normalitätsvorstellungen kritisieren und Bezug auf verschiedenen Formen von Benachteiligung aber auch Privilegien nehmen. Gemeinsam wird untersucht, welche Folgen Ableism für andere Frauen aus dem Umfeld der Aktivistinnen hat, sowohl bezogen auf Behinderung als auch darüber hinaus. Ziel des Forschungsprojekts ist es, in Kooperation mit Aktivistinnen einen feministischen intersektionalen Zugang zu Ableism zu entwerfen und herauszuarbeiten, wie ein solcher Ansatz Vorstellungen von Fähigkeit in unterschiedlichen Kontexten aufdeckt.

The Austrian Science Fund project Ableism, the dis/ability binary and beyond: A feminist intersectional approach to theory and digital activism will examine together with feminist disability activists how, by/for whom and for what purpose ableism has been discussed in scholarship and activism so far. The focus of this is how the interplay of (dis)ability, gender, social class, and race is considered in debates on ableism. Furthermore, it will be explored how the activists themselves critique ableism and notions of corporeal normality in their (digital) activism and thereby refer to various forms of disadvantage but also privilege. Together, the effects of ableism, both in relation to disability and beyond, on other women from the activists' communities will then be examined. The aim of the research project is to collaboratively create a feminist intersectional approach to ableism and to explore how such an approach reveals notions of ability (or rather ‘abledment’) in different contexts.
